Yi Sohri works with metal, a classical medium, to pursue a practice that layers meticulous craftsmanship with refined aesthetics. Her jewelry goes beyond mere ornamentation, creating tension between wearability and form, and thereby expands the material possibilities inherent in metalwork. What stands out most is her technical mastery: the precision evident in her fabrication and finishing inspires the viewer’s trust in the hand of a true artisan.

The impression conveyed by Yi’s work lies in its restraint of form and minimalist sensibility. Clean lines, geometric structures, and subtle surface treatments evoke an affinity with German design aesthetics and recall an international design language. In doing so, her practice refuses to confine metalwork within the traditional realm of decoration, instead drawing it into the discourse of contemporary design.

「지어져가는 (Being Built)」은 어떤 개념에서 출발한 작업인가요?

A.

「지어져가는」은 인간의 삶을 건축 행위와 연결시키는 데서 출발했습니다. 인생에 설계도가 존재한다면 어떤 사람들은 자신의 인생을 건축가처럼 스스로 설계하려 하지만, 저는, 인생의 주체가 나 자신이 아닌, 신 혹은 섭리라고 보고, 인생의 설계도는 섭리에 맡기고, 인부처럼 주어진 일을 수행하는 태도로 삶을 받아들이고 있습니다.

마치 골조를 세우고 벽돌을 하나씩 쌓아 올리는 것처럼, 누군가의 설계도를 따라 한 명의 인부로서 제 역할을 다하는 느낌이요. 결국 인간은 태어나는 순간도, 죽는 순간도 스스로 정할 수 없는 불완전한 존재이기 때문에, 저는 결과보다는 현재 과정에 집중하려고 합니다.

공간 안에서 살아가고 있는 인간. 그 인간도 하나의 공간으로 볼 수 있다. 막힌 공간이 아닌 입구와 출구를 갖고 있는 통로로써의 공간이다. 세상 안에 존재하는 인간은 혼자 살 수 없고, 개인의 의지와 상관없이 서로에게 영향을 주고 받을 수 밖에 없다. 다양하고 복잡한 상호 관계를 이루며 존재하는 그 무엇이라 함은 눈에 보이지 않는 감정이나 가치관 등이 될 수도 있고, 물리적인 어떤 것일 수도 있다. 그러한 가운데 서로에게 긍정적 또는 부정적인 영향을 끼칠 수도 있다. 무언가를 전해 받고 또 다시 무언가를 전하는 그러한 통로로서의 인간. 그런 매개체의 역할이 주어져 있다면 나는 어떤 통로이고 싶은가. 또한 나의 작품을 통해 나는 무엇의, 무엇을 위한 통로가 되고 그것을 어떻게 조형적으로 실현할 수 있을 지 고민한다.

A human being lives within space, yet the human being can also be regarded as a space in itself—not a closed space, but a passage, one that has both an entrance and an exit. A person existing in the world cannot live alone; regardless of individual will, we inevitably influence one another.

That which forms these diverse and complex interrelationships may be intangible—such as emotions or values—or it may take physical form. In this process, we may exert positive or negative effects on each other. A human is thus a passage: receiving something, and then transmitting something further.

If such a role as a conduit is given to me, I ask myself: what kind of passage do I wish to be? Through my work, what do I become a passage for, and for whom? And how can I embody that role in sculptural form?

"지어져가는 (Being Built)"은 인간의 삶을 건축 행위와 연결시키는 개념에서 출발한다. 일부 사람들은 건축가처럼 자신이 설계한 인생의 청사진을 완성하는데 주력하지만, 나는 인생의 설계는 섭리에 맡기고, 인부의 자세로 주어진 일들을 수행한다. 이는 마치 골조를 세우고 벽돌을 하나씩 쌓아 올리는 과정과도 같으며, 누군가가 그려놓은 설계도에 따라 내가 한 명의 인부로서 내 임무를 완수해 나가는 느낌이다. 이러한 접근은 가시적인 결과보다는 현 재의 과정을 더 중시하는 삶의 태도를 반영한다.

이를 바탕으로, 작업은 건축적이고 구조적인 형태를 띠고 있지만, 완성된 건축물의 모습보다는 시공 중인 구조물의 상태에 집중한다. 이를 통해 '지어져 가는 과정' 자체를 표현하고자 했으며, 이 과정 중심의 접근은 삶의 불확실성과 미완성, 그리고 인간의 불완전함을 받아들이는 태도를 드러낸다

“Being Built” begins with the idea of connecting human life to the act of construction. While some people focus on completing the blueprint of life they have designed like an architect, I entrust the design of life to providence and take on the stance of a laborer, faithfully carrying out the tasks given to me. This is like erecting a framework and laying bricks one by one, following a plan drawn by someone else, while I, as one of the workers, fulfill my role. Such an approach reflects an attitude that values the present process more than the visible outcome.

Based on this perspective, my work takes on architectural and structural forms, but it focuses not on the appearance of a completed building, but on the state of a structure under construction. In doing so, I aim to express the very process of “being built.” This process-oriented approach reveals an acceptance of life’s uncertainties, its incompleteness, and the inherent imperfection of humanity.
